Why We Make It 

What even is gravel riding? It runs the gamut from leisurely off-road exploration to speed-focused dirt and single-track riding. This wheel is more of the latter than the former, with an aerodynamic profile and low rim weight. It aptly fills the need for a rugged, high-performance wheelset in our product lineup. 

Why You Want It 

Reserve’s 40|44 GR rims are a 40mm front paired with a 44mm rear, built wide enough to accommodate tires up to 50c. Reserve uses internally reinforced spoke holes to strengthen the area of the rim that experiences the most force around the spoke nipple.  

We pair the 40|44 rims with our R45D™ Centerlock hubs, powered by our patented RingDrive™ system. You want them because their 45 points of simultaneous engagement deliver instantaneous engagement and superior power transfer. We wrap the system in a lightweight hub body, along with our legendary made-in-house bearings, and finish them with a one-piece axle that delivers laser-precise bike handling. In short, these hubs just roll faster, last longer, and look better than anything else out there.   

Chris King bearings, both steel and ceramic, have heat-treated, surgical-grade steel races that are machined simultaneously to ensure perfect matching. The quality and speed of our bearings is what you will feel (and hear) on every ride. As Chris King bearing tracks burnish, they actually get faster (we have data), which means the more you ride, the faster they get. A little bit of regular love (i.e., service) will keep these hubs rolling for years upon years of demanding use. 

This wheelset comes with the legendary “angry bee” sound, and you can choose from a bunch of sharp hub colors, including basic black.

RingDrive TM

We live by the ideal that a product is not worth making unless you make it better. When developing a rear hub, many engagement systems were tried and the RingDriveTMprevailed as the best of the best.

The system consists of three primary parts: the Drive Ring, the Driven Ring, and the Driveshell (freehub). The design allows us to move the engagement mechanism inside the hubshell, inward of the large hubshell bearing, allowing it to have more contact area than a traditional freehub design, and better mitigate torque from the drivetrain. The Drive and Driven Rings are made of heat-treated stainless-steel and have 72-points of simultaneous engagement (45-points in the R45 road hubs). These provide ample, positive engagement, and are capable of handling a torque load of over 800ft/lbs, three times greater than other high end hubs we tested!

Our Bearings

At Chris King, we design and make our own bearings in-house. They are the foundation of everything we sell, and producing them ourselves gives us full control over the entire process to manufacture bearings that are purpose-built for use in our components. This allows us to design products that not only perform better but also have greater longevity. Every single Chris King bearing is inspected and assembled by hand.

Unlike common radial bearings, we build sealed angular-contact bearings that allow for adjustment as they are used. Rather than wear out, our bearings wear in; like a fine wine or a quality guitar, they get better with age. All of our bearings are user-serviceable without special tools. Simply remove the snap ring and seal, clean, and re-grease the bearing for a lifetime of faithful rolling.
