Every now and again, we like to take a break from work and put on the Gourmet Century. No ordinary bike ride, this is a rolling party of either 350 cyclists who enjoy gourmet food or gourmet foodists who like to ride. The course is typically a metric century with organic lemonade stands posted on the crests of hill climbs chosen also for their photographic beauty. Seven course feasts and bottles of the area's best vintage await you and your friends at day’s end.
The Gourmet Century is a non-competitive ride and is well suited to riders of all skill levels. While road bikes are most commonly used for century rides, the friendly, easy going nature of this event allows riders to use any bike on which they feel comfortable. Road bikes, hybrids, mountain bikes are all encouraged.
Past courses have wound their way through the Santa Ynez and Sonoma Valleys of California. Now that we're settled in to our new home in Portland, Oregon we're scoping out new courses and venues to hold our first Oregon-based Gourmet Century.
In 2007 we offered just a taste of what future Gourmet Centuries will be like in Oregon. The Pioneer Century, held just south of Portland on June 2, and presented by the Portland Wheelmen Touring Club featured a central rest stop supported by Chris King. This beautiful 100-mile ride is comprised of two nearly equal loops configured as a figure-eight course. Set a good pace and you just might get to eat twice!
The Pioneer Century for 2008 is scheduled for Saturday June 7th.
